Author, film expert, and world traveler Robin Holabird writes regularly about movies and their locations for Rotten Tomatoes and her weekly program on Reno’s NPR affiliate KUNR. Her book Around the World in 80 Movies (Ice Cube Press 2019), shows the link between films and travel destinations. Her follow-up series, Popcorn & Passports explores locations and movies featuring cultural centers, the great outdoors, and a potpourri of places. Holabird’s first book, Elvis, Marilyn and the Space Aliens, (University of Nevada Press 2017) examines how Nevada’s public image appears on screen.

 

As a film commissioner for the state of Nevada, Robin worked with Paul Thomas Anderson, Clint Eastwood, Taylor Hackford, Rob Reiner, and other directors on such projects as Hard Eight, Magnolia, Pink Cadillac, Love Ranch, Misery, and CSI.

 

Before earning a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Nevada-Reno, she honed writing skills with a degree in Journalism from Cal-Poly, Humboldt plus reporting and review stints at KOLO, KCRL, the Sparks Tribune, and for 10 years as editor of the magazine Locations--a post that took her around the world.

 

Robin helped found the original Reno Film Festival and worked with Nevada’s Cordillera, Sci-On, and Ely film festivals. She is a member of the Las Vegas Film Critics Society and serves on the Northern Nevada Wine Association’s board of directors. She also sat on the Association of Film Commissioners, International board and was President of the Sierra Arts Foundation board.

 

Robin is a regular hiker and runner who finished the Boston Marathon six times. An outdoor enthusiast who loves photography, she travels the world with her husband Fred and their rubber travel mascots D.D. and Jeremiah.
