Wines that match the Oscar nominees

It took the best picture Oscar nominee Sideways to make me realize that all awards contenders can pair with wines or other beverages, and the 2023 list provides ten opportunities to play with palates before the March 12 show. My suggestions run alphabetically by movie:

All Quiet on the Western Front--Strong and leathery, a French Bordeaux suits the feel of this powerful anti-war film.

Avatar: The Way of Water--With a title like that you have to go for H2O, but something flashier than tap.

Banshees of Inisherin—The Irish setting indicates a stout beer, but oenophiles can also choose from a Sonoma label called Banshees.

Elvis--The colorful, glittery approach of Australian director Baz Luhrmann deserves a sparkling shiraz.

Everything, Everywhere All At Once--Throw in as many varietals as you can, which means the 13 grapes of a Chateau Neuf de Pape.

The Fabelmans—With frequent references to director Steven Spielberg’s heritage, a kosher classic

suits the story line.

Tár—Its chewiness sticks with you, Petite Sirah works with this deep film.

Top Gun—Light and fun, who doesn’t like pinot grigio?

Triangle of Sadness—Called a comedy despite its title and a few plot elements, the movie calls for a surprising wine, a real Conundrum—the name of a blend from Caymus.

Women Talking—Get a group together and you might spot a bottle or more of Rombauer Chardonnay.

So hoist a glass for your favorite and see who wins March 12.
